Measure, Track
& Change.
At Island Brewing, a key area in the design of the business was actively seeking to minimize and offset our impact on the environment by using an earth-forward focus as a decision-making framework in our business.
Earth forward is a framework where the inputs & outputs of the business are carefully measured and tracked; providing data that will be used in the reduction of the businesses' environmental impact.
At the design stage, we felt the opportunity to consider our business's potential environmental impact & build in ways to reduce, was non-negotiable. This meant researching not only efficient systems & operations, but investing in, and installing equipment that provides tangible reductions from the start.
Understanding that a business’s impact can only be clearly identified through tracking, we have begun installing monitoring systems throughout the brewery which will allow us to track key data points and highlight where improvements need be made. We believe that accurate data will inform a more targeted and effective approach to the reduction of our impact.
2023: Renewable electricity is a crucial part of our strategy to reduce reliance on the PLN grid. By generating energy that produces no greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, we aim to cut air pollution and diversify our energy supply, reducing dependence on imports. In 2023, we installed 88 solar panels, generating 25% to 30% of our electricity consumption from renewable sources.
2024: This year, we've doubled down on our solar commitment, increasing our solar panel count from 88 to 128. This expansion isn't just about following green trends; it's a tangible step toward our core mission. By adding 40 more panels, we're not only fulfilling a promise made last year but actively shaping a future that reflects our values.
This 52.2% increase in our solar array is a significant stride towards brewing not only great beer but also a sustainable tomorrow.
In practical terms, our solar capacity has now soared to an impressive 67 kWp, with our monthly solar production jumping to 9.1 MWh. This move goes beyond mere numbers. It's about making a real, positive impact on the environment.
By boosting our solar power, we've elevated our self-sufficiency to nearly 36.1%, reducing our dependency on grid power. It's more than just brewing beer, it's about brewing a better future. So next time you enjoy one of our beers, take pride in knowing that it's not just crafted with hops and love, but also with a generous ray of sunshine.
Wastewater is a key concern in brewing – we have built an extensively engineered wastewater treatment system to recondition our wastewater to a quality whereby it can be reintroduced to the natural environment without adverse effects. As we grow, we have recognised that we need to expand our wastewater treatment facilities; therefore, we have an expansion in process to handle future output.
In order to properly estimate the emissions produced by our employees’ movements and shift to more sustainable options, we are modernising our team's work travel.
• Employees of Island Brewing utilising scooters to travel around or to work will be eligible for our (e-FORWARD) program in partnership with NIU Electric scooters Bali. This program subsidises the purchasing and switch to electric scooters, and providing the necessary charging stations.
• We employ RoadWise, an AI-Powered route optimiser to save time and unnecessary fuel usage when planning our delivery routes in co-operation with our distribution partner. Increasing delivery efficiency and decreasing time spent on the road for our drivers.

Island Brewing X NIU
Mattia from Island Brewing sat down with Oliver from NIU to have a little chat about the awesome collaboration between these two companies. With mutual goals to reduce negative ecological impacts from each business, these two have put their heads together to work towards a common goal.
Solar panels help our brewery to save money on energy bills over the long term. This allows us to invest more resources into other areas of the business, such as building efficient systems and expanding our earth forward initiative.
The importance of solar panels for our brewery lies in the ability to provide a sustainable and cost-effective source of energy, while also helping to reduce their impact on the environment.
The value of electric vehicles for Island Brewing lies in its capacity to offer a sustainable and affordable mobility option, as well as aid in lowering the environmental impact of the brewery. Breweries may make a significant step toward a future that is more ecologically friendly and sustainable by adopting electric transportation.
Tracking electricity usage is important for Island Brewing's brewery as it can help the company identify areas where energy efficiency improvements can be made. By monitoring electricity usage, the brewery can gain insight into how much energy is being used and where it is being consumed. This can enable the brewery to identify opportunities to reduce energy waste and optimize their energy usage, ultimately leading to cost savings and a reduced environmental impact.
